There are several strategies for making money in Skyrim early on aside from exploring dungeons and spelunking that one can use without resorting to cheats.
1. Smithing and Enchanting Iron Daggers and Jewelry
One method to make money is to create iron daggers or jewelry at a blacksmith's forge, enchant them and then sell them. This method has the added benefit of building up smithing and enchanting skills. Finding the transmutation spell can help by more easily allowing the creation of gold jewelry. One limitation at least early on is the difficulty of procuring good soul gems for enchanting.
2. Chop Wood
At a lumber yard like the one in Riverwood one can chop wood and then sell it. A consistent but slow and repetitive way of making money.
3. Create Potions
If one knows the recipes for certain potions one can collect the ingredients, make the potions and then sell them for profit. Alchemy skill is improved and if one knows how to make fortify smithing and fortify enchanting potions, one can take those potions to significantly boost the results of the smithing and enchanting method.
4. Hunt Giants, Mammoths, and Dragons
When one is strong enough, hunting down giants, mammoths and dragons may be an attractive way to earn coin. These large beasts respawn after around 20 days and leave behind respectable loot. One will also have to find the various locations where they can be found first though.

How to Beat a Skyrim Dragon
To kill a dragon in Skyrim can be an exciting experience the first time around but it can also become a tedious exercise if approached haphazardly with no strategy. Here are some tips to help take down a dragon quickly and easily. If your character is at a low level try to get near non-player characters. They will help to inflict damage to the dragon and may serve as alternative target decoys. Early in the fight against a dragon when it has a lot of hit points and is swooping around, ranged weapons and spells are what you need, so bow and arrows is likely necessary or spells like fireball and chain lightning if you have them. Usually the dragon circles then comes to a stationary position where it can be more easily hit. Often the dragon follows a fixed pattern with the dragon favoring a particular position from which to hover and attack. This makes it predictable. Prepare one's best attack while it circles then unleash it when the dragon pauses. It can be time-consuming whittling the dragon's health down at lower levels so patience is necessary. When a dragon is weakened enough, however, it will stay on the ground where it is vulnerable to stronger melee attacks which can finish it off quicker.
Once one learns the Dragonrend shout it therefore becomes much easier to defeat dragons. The strategy is to prioritize keeping the dragon down with Dragonrend and only then attacking it in earnest. For example one Dragonrend shout to bring the dragon down, then another to keep it down, followed by strong melee attacks immediately after to inflict damage while keeping an eye on the shout bar to unleash another Dragonrend shout the moment it is possible while the dragon is still on the ground to keep it there and prevent any further opportunity for it to fly.

Skyrim Potions, Alchemy Ingredients, and Their Effects
Benefits of Improving Alchemy Skill
Powerful potions and potent poisons can be created with high alchemy skill. In tight battles, health potions can make all the difference between victory or death. Potions can also help in game exploration and in building up one's character by temporarily enhancing skills. Creating potions aside from increasing alchemy skill also tends to improve speech if the potions are sold and can earn significant coin. All-in-all alchemy is a recommended skill to prioritize and develop.
Useful Potion Recipe List
Examples of some useful potions:
Potions for Money
With sufficient skill created potions can be sold for a high price greatly easing the burden of making money in the game. Creating powerful expensive potions also have the added benefit of increasing alchemy skill level faster.
Most Expensive Potions when Selling for Money
All other things being equal the potions one can create that command the highest prices all have Giant's Toe as a common ingredient.
Bear Claws + Giant's Toe + Hanging Moss
Blue Butterfly Wing + Blue Mountain Flower + Giant's Toe
Creep Cluster + Giant's Toe + Hanging Moss
Bear Claws + Creep Cluster + Giant's Toe
Blue Mountain Flower + Creep Cluster + Giant's Toe
Creep Cluster + Giant's Toe + Glowing Mushroom
Creep Cluster + Giant's Toe + Wheat
Giant's Toe + Wheat + Wisp Wrappings
Giant's Toe + Scaly Pholiota + Wheat
Giant's Toe + Glowing Mushroom + Wisp Wrappings
Expensive Potions for Lower Level Characters
Killing giants, however, to get a steady supply of giant's toes can be difficult if your character is not already leveled up and powerful. Early on in the game it may make more sense to avoid such confrontations and try making other potions which while not among the most profitable potions containing giant's toe can still help make money and just as important increase alchemy skill.
Potions with multiple high value effects tend to be the most valuable. The potion effects that command the highest price are paralysis, damage magicka regen, invisibility, slow, fortify carry weight and regenerate effects. If creating potions with the sole intent to sell and make money, creating potions that combine both positive and negative effects may make more sense. Keep ingredients commonly found on farms like wheat for potion making; they probably have more value as potion ingredients than if sold directly.
Some high-value potions which can be created with more readily available ingredients are the following:
Blue Butterfly Wing + Blue Mountain Flower + Wheat
Creep Cluster + Deathbell + River Betty
Deathbell + Jazbay Grape + Salt Pile
Dragon's Tongue + Fly Amanita + Mora Tapinella or Scaly Pholiota
Glow Dust + Glowing Mushroom + Hanging Moss
Purple Mountain Flower + Frost Mirriam + Wheat

Playing as a Mage – Some Tips and Observations
Some observations and recommendations:
Playing as a dedicated mage can be tough. The lack of defense or ability to damage at close range is a big drawback. Dual wielding destruction spells looks nice but isn't effective or convenient. Being able to maintain a high defense with a stoneflesh spell or similar I've found usually takes precedence and alternating to a dual wielding destruction spell setup isn't feasible in the heat of battle. So I wouldn't recommend using up perks on dual wielding destruction. Expending effort to remain undetected is usually the most rational choice for a mage in battle. An important perk for a dedicated mage would thus be Quiet Casting. Restoration perks speeding up magic regeneration are also useful and easy to overlook.
I've also found a dedicated mage really needs an NPC tank to help block and prevent enemies from approaching. A cheat of sorts is having Barbas along. Barbas is pretty much indestructble and of more use than the daedric artifact his quest line is related to so don't be in a hurry to finish that quest if at all. Still Barbas like other NPC helpers can be incapacitated with ice spikes, wander off, or be left behind during a fight.

Fortify Restoration Cheat Step-by-Step Instructions
The fortify restoration fortify alchemy fortify enchanting loop is a potentially game busting exploit in Skyrim based on a fortify restoration potion glitch that improves the active effects of the apparel or armor that the main character is wearing, something especially useful for clothing and armor with the fortify alchemy bonus. This fortify restoration fortify alchemy loop can then be repeated for cumulative effect. With very high fortify alchemy one can create very powerful potions and sell them for large sums of gold or use them for super-enhanced effects notably to increase fortify enchanting and create game killing enchanted weapons and armor.
Procedure
How it works (creating a save before experimenting with the cheat highly recommended):
1. Find and collect ingredients with a fortify restoration effect.
Fortify restoration potion recipe ingredients
2. Create or obtain clothes or armor with the fortify alchemy enchantment.
Fortify alchemy apparel could be gloves/bracers, ring, necklace, circlet, and falmer helmet all enchanted with fortify alchemy preferably using grand or black soul gems.
3. Wear the clothes or armor with the effects you want to improve, in this case fortify alchemy.
4. Create a fortify restoration potion.
5. Drink/use the newly created fortify restoration potion.
6. Quickly unequip all the fortify alchemy equipment then re-equip them.
7. Repeat steps 4–6 quickly until fortify restoration ingredients run out or as desired. Each repetition should cumulatively improve the alchemical bonus provided by the equipment worn and create progressively stronger fortify restoration potions.
Outcome
After the last fortify restoration potion's effect would normally run out, the bonus effect on the clothes will appear to revert back to normal if checking through the equip menu, but a look at the active effects menu will show that the cumulative bonus actually still remains. The cumulative bonus will continue to be active until the apparel or armor is unequipped, so do not remove these items unless one wants to remove the bonus and start back at square one.
With vastly improved potion creation ability one can create powerful potions that can then be used to greatly enhance other skills and promote their learning such as enchanting and smithing which in turn can lead to the creation of vastly more powerful items.
Fortify enchanting potion recipe ingredients
Since the improvement is geometric in progression, starting from a high alchemy skill level and high bonus apparel can lead to dramatically larger improvement than starting from lower skill or bonus levels. It should also improve alchemy skill more noticeably than before. Starting from too low a level can be relatively costly and produce meager results so it may be best to level up first and focus on this trick after gaining regular access to better soul gems with which to create more powerful enchanted items for step 2. An Alchemy skill level of 30 with Alchemist perk at level 2 and Physician and Benefactor perks is recommended as well before trying this exploit.

Oghma Infinium Cheat - Step-by-Step Instructions
The Skyrim Oghma Infinium glitch is an exploit that can be used to easily increase skills in Skyrim. As such it is a potentially game busting/ruining bug. To take advantage of the Oghma Infinium book glitch, one needs to have completed the quest Discerning the Transmundane and obtained the Oghma Infinium book, the daedric artifact related to Hermaeus Mora. One also needs to use a container for the trick which may differ depending on the version of Skyrim one is playing. In earlier and later versions a bookshelf may be required while version 1.2 of the game may use any containers like chests, cupboards, and dead bodies but not a bookshelf. I can confirm that in an earlier version that the bookshelf that comes as a decoration improvement for Breezehome in Whiterun can be used for this leveling trick. The version 1.9 patch supposedly removes this Oghma Infinium bug. It is highly recommended to save before experimenting with this exploit.
Using the Breezehome bookshelf this is how the bug works:
1. With the Oghma Infinium in your inventory activate the bookshelf
2. Using the bookshelf menu go into your inventory to look at the unread Oghma Infinium. Options should appear.
3. Select an improvement path (Path of Might, Path of Shadows, or Path of Magic)
4. Go back to the bookshelf menu by pressing the back button once (usually Tab key on a PC)
5. Place the Oghma Infinium on the bookshelf by selecting Store (usually R key on a PC)
6. Exit the menu. The Oghma Infinium should appear on the bookshelf.
7. Select the Oghma Infinium (not the bookshelf). The Oghma Infinium should automatically open up and present an option screen.
8. Select Do not read.
9. Select Take (usually E key on a PC).
10. Go back to step 1 and repeat as often as desired. One can max out all skills at 100.
Make sure to perform the above sequence strictly and slowly if the option menu is not popping up after the first time or the Oghma Infinium is simply disappearing. Difficulty obtaining the desired effect was noticed when going too fast. Difficulty was also encountered when confusing/conflating activating the bookshelf with activating the Oghma Infinium, one may lead to a different result from the other. Also notice there is no intermediate step between step 8 and step 9 such as closing the book; the book is taken directly after choosing Do not read.
If reproducing this exploit is proving difficult despite following these directions on how to perform the Oghma Infinium glitch, try loading another save or exiting Whiterun and returning. One might also try placing the Oghma Infinium on the bookshelf first then start the cycle from step 7.

Esbern Bug - How to Fix
Problem: Esbern Door Glitch
During the quest A Cornered Rat to find Esbern in the Riften Warren, an annoying glitch can come up. The problem is that Esbern is behind a door and it's possible upon encountering him for the dialogue to go by very quickly making it unreadable and following his instructions impossible. Worse the door separating you remains locked shut. This can leave one frustrated and unsure of what to do. This is a bug and a fix is required.
Solution: Unpack BSA Sound Files
The usual problem is that certain files have not been installed correctly. There are some fixes and workarounds that involve console commands that can get one around the immediate problem, but these can be quirky and may not address problems that can crop up later on. More reliable are fixes that make files that were not installed correctly available. One can use a search engine to find a fix by typing in something like "Skyrim Esbern voice fix" and then following the instructions that come with it. However, the early fixes that came out for this bug seem to use proprietary files from the game and seem to be disappearing, being taken down by those who created them. An alternative is to download the BSA unpacker at http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3117 and then use it to unpack the file "Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa" in the game's Data directory. There should then be a new Sound directory afterward (\Data\sound\voice\skyrim.esm\maleuniqueesbern). Upon playing, the quest should now proceed without problems.
